Traditional Chinese painting of pink lotus flowers

The large free hand technique is one of two styles of free hand Chinese painting characterised by large brush strokes and small stroke number demonstrated in the above painting.

In this style of painting traditional pigments are carefully applied to a large fine fibre goat or rabbit hair brush then daubed onto the paper with a practised stroke that will in one delicate action produce the correct shading and shape of the form to be drawn.

Developing in parallel with the history of calligraphy Chinese free hand painting draws from a series of recognised strokes as it’s palette to produce recognisable and beautiful images.

This free hand painting by our designer has evident bright pink colours of the lotus flower lightening this small yet peaceful natural scene of verdant foliage.

Though Chinese free hand paintings tend towards use of blacker pigment inks this scene radiates a light summer’s day feeling from the long healthy stems of flowers that then open towards the light while large leaves suggest warmth and radiance.

Micro scenes of nature such as this often form the settings for the artists “bird and flower” paintings where the paintings offer us windows into dynamic scenes of natural beauty.

Note this scene has not been stamped and so cannot be considered completed as shown we would stamp with the designers seal if sold.

This painting is upon a long sheet of traditional arts paper of white colour and carries a slightly grey tint as evidenced in the photo which is common to this type of traditional paper.

The painting is unmounted though would be sold mounted upon a fabric canvas banner of good quality and suitable to be hung or transported safely.

YAN Pink lotus flower and bird traditional Chinese painting

Rich pink colours emanate from the lotus flowers in this bright summer scene of the “bird and flower” genre in traditional Chinese painting style.

As is typical of this style a small window into nature is recreated on paper, conveying the natural world of secluded darker grasses painted in traditional inks contrasted with the bright summer colours of the lotus flower and blue bird.

This scene projects rich detail from the central pink flower with radiant colourful petals and the bird is painted with a lifelike poise and feature while the colouring of the large lotus leaves suggest a warm and sunny day and the darker grasses and plants add a further depth to this natural setting.

Perhaps the most classic representative flower of traditional Chinese painting the water growing lotus has since ancient times been loved and painted in all forms, sang in poetic prose in the Tang dynasty and has left a cultural heritage in oral language that has endured to this day.

The paper is mounted upon a slightly off white tending towards yellow card whose colour is captured adequately in the above picture when compared to the white background of the website, this is not a framed painting yet has a rigidity suitable for direct hanging or better still mounting in a frame or other display medium.

YAN Three Gold Fish water scene Chinese painting

The dark bamboo leaves overhang a playful yet peaceful scene of goldfish frolicking in the clear waters, similar to “Flower and Bird” paintings the Chinese paintings of fish display a small window into beautiful nature of animal and plant.

The large tails and delicate fins of these small animals propel them through the water in lazy peaceful fashion perhaps idling in the shade of the bamboo leaves offers a little respite from the warmth of this sunny day.

Fairly typical of YAN paintings this piece displays a colourful colour palette which is very beautiful and brings a great deal of colour, though YAN paintings use traditional typically mineral inks which tend towards darker colours – as evidenced in the overhanging bamboo, which is typical of this style of work – her work that shows animals often bring much colour and life.

The drawing of fish is described in this post here and this work – as is fairly typical in Chinese traditional arts painting – have fish that are drawn with a great life and movement, though in this piece subdued due to the nature of the setting.
